Chapter 8

Emmerick shuffled towards the doors to the clan house, watching Kylor a few feet in front of him. Emmerick had never seen his alpha so angry or upset, the power of the alpha master pulsing around them in waves, making the very air vibrate, and causing everyone close enough to slump under the heaviness of it. Even Hillier was a few steps away from the big male, unwilling to touch him in his current state. Kylor was so agitated, that it was affecting everyone through the blood bond as well. Emmerick could feel it, the bond thrumming in his head, giving him a headache. He only hoped that Darrian, who was waiting just inside the doors, and Hillier could help Kylor calm down. Emmerick understood why Kylor was so distraught, even if it was affecting everyone else and making them exceedingly uncomfortable.

This last raid was bad. Really bad. Sorrow and anguish weighed Emmerick down as well. They’d lost four dyads to death, and that wasn’t even the worst of it. What they’d found once they breached the compound still made Emmerick’s stomach churn. Every room of the manor filled with the dead. Nothing but younglings, whelps and human children. All of them covered in bite marks, and most of them with flesh torn and consumed, blood staining the floor, walls and even the ceiling. The stench had been overwhelming, causing several dyads to run from the mansion, losing what was in their stomachs. It had been a close call for Emmerick, but he’d managed to keep from vomiting, though he’d gagged a few times. Emmerick never wanted to see such a sight again. He was never going to be able to scrub the ghastly images from his brain.

He passed through the doors, intent on getting to his room and trying to rid himself of the memory of such senseless destruction and death. So caught up in his thoughts and emotions, and the heavy weight of Kylor’s anguish, he wasn’t watching where he was going and ran into someone. Automatically, he grabbed the person’s arms, keeping them from falling. When he looked to see who he’d almost run over and to apologize, his eyes locked with large green ones, shock on Cabe’s face at being held by Emmerick. His first instinct was to let go, shove Cabe away from him and run. But he couldn’t do it. His were spirit was in a frenzy, clawing at him to claim the vampire in front of him, the turmoil in his mind more than he could handle.

He pushed Cabe back until the vampire hit the wall, pinning him with his body and then took his mouth in a fevered kiss. The instant Emmerick tasted Cabe, his senses went into overdrive, the coffee and cinnamon scent invading his nose. The vampire had gained some weight, giving Emmerick a hard, slightly muscular body to press against. He could smell Cabe’s arousal, feel the hard length of the male against his thigh.
